Vila Franca Do Campo is the oldest city on San Miguel and its former capital. It was founded by the first settlers in the 15th century. But after an earthquake in 1522 the city was destroyed and most of the inhabitants died. Ponte Delgada then became the capital of the Azores.
Nossa Senhora da Paz
Nossa Senhora da Paz is a religious monument on a mountain next to the city.
Tis is its story: A sheperd finds a statue of the Virgin Mary in a small grotto in the mountains. He brings it to the priest. The priest puts it into the church. The next day the statue was gone missing and later recovered in the grotto again. After some attempts with the same result, the people of Vila Franca decide to build this beautiful chapel with fantastic views on the mountain.
That chapel reminds me of the many chapels and churches we saw on our Portuguese Camino in 2018 … once again, your pictures are really stunning!
